How Often Should You Train?

IMG 1100

I get asked a lot how often should you train. My answer is to start at 3 sessions a week. 3 sessions a week of a well balanced programme at relatively high intensity is enough for busy working adults to start seeing progress in their fitness and health.

What’s a well balanced programme? Quite simply: what we do! A good mixture of movements for strength, movements for your mobility, and movements for your heart health. Not biased too much towards excess strength or excess cardio. And with the aim of a total body workout, legs, core, and the shoulders should get a look in 😉

What’s relative high intensity? Exercise that pushes you to the right level of discomfort, just outside your comfort zone. That can differ on a given day; some days showing up pushes you enough, other days you can challenge yourself to find your edge. You don’t need to kill yourself to see results. In fact, if you push yourself too much past the point you can recover, it’ll backfire.

Is 3 days enough? Ideally, you’re moving every day. A good walk outside, some stretching, playing some sport or messing around with your kids – these all add up to a healthy, sustainable routine.

This is a good starting point, and from there you can test to see if your body responds to more or less intense versus recovery sessions.
